2022 Updates to the CASPer Test (Altus Suite) for Pre-Meds

Badyah Senussi

The CASPer, which was first developed by McMaster University Medical School in 2010 and subsequently adopted by dozens of Canadian and US medical schools, has recently been given an upgrade and expansion.

In this article, we’ll cover its transformation into “Altus Suite,” a series of three different tests and assessments: the CASPer, the Snapshot, and the Duet.

We hope this breakdown helps prepare you for these additional hoops you’ll need to jump through for your 2022-2023 application.

CASPer

What it is:

CASPer is a 100-120 minute online exam where you are given 15 real-world situations/dilemmas and respond about what you would do.

What it assesses:

CASPer rates an applicant’s ability to problem-solve while displaying traits of professionalism (ethics, collaboration, and empathy) and social intelligence.

What is the structure of the test:

CASPer now comes in two parts, a typed response and a video response. For the typed response, you will have three word-based scenarios and six video-based scenarios (all in random order).

After each presented dilemma, you have 30 seconds of reflection and then five minutes to respond to three open-ended questions. It’s important to note that minor spelling and grammar mistakes will not impact your score.

For the video portion of the exam, you will have two word-based scenarios and four video-based scenarios (all in random order). You will have 30 seconds of reflection time and 10 seconds to read each open-ended question. You will have one minute to record your response. Keep in mind that grammar mistakes or accents will not be counted against you.

How to prepare:

The best way to get ready to take the CASPer is by practicing with mock tests. Check out Suite Test Prep for 2022/23 Test Takers - TakeAltus to get a better idea of what the exam will be like. Also, check out these Surefire Tips for Improving Your CASPer Score (With Examples)

Snapshot

What it is:

Snapshot is a video-response section which mimics interviews.

What it assesses:

In this section, you will be evaluated on your drive to enter medicine, your communication skills, and your self-examination.

What is the structure of the test:

In this test, you only answer three questions. You only have two minutes to answer each question.

Make sure to reserve a slot to take this test within 14 days of taking the CASPer!

How to prepare:

To get ready to take the Snapshot, practice answering common interview questions in front of a mirror.

Remember to breathe, make eye contact, and have fun talking about yourself.

Duet

What it is:

Duet measures the synergy of the applicant and programs based on values and priorities.

What is assesses:

A value-alignment assessment that compares what you value in a program with what the program has to offer.

Make sure to reserve a slot to take this test within 14 days of taking the CASPer!

What is the structure of the test:

There is no time limit for this test, but the average time of completion is 15 minutes. There will be 21 questions for you to indicate which characteristic you like the most.

How to prepare:

For this section, it is all about your preference, so there’s nothing you could practice here other than trusting your instinct.
