How to Figure Out What Makes You Unique

Every pre-med wants to stand out. Most are worried that they don’t, or that they don’t know what actually makes them stand out.

Here’s how to start figuring it out:

1. Describe yourself in 5–10 words.
Don’t overthink it. Write down the first few words that come to mind when you think about who you are, not just as a student but as a person. These can be personality traits, habits, or even quirks. The goal is to see what feels authentic when you read it back.

2. Ask how others would describe you.
Your friends, professors, or coworkers probably see strengths you overlook. Their words can help you name qualities you take for granted.

3. Look for patterns.
Compare the two lists. Where do they overlap? What shows up on one that surprises you? Those connections can help you see the through-line in your story and the qualities that show up whether you are in class, in clinic, or in conversation.

4. Don’t force a theme.
Your application shouldn’t sound like a brand campaign. Let the connections reveal themselves. The goal is to sound human, not rehearsed.

Being unique isn’t about inventing something new. It’s about understanding yourself well enough to explain why your path makes sense.
