MD vs DO: What Matters and What Doesn’t

MD vs DO comes up in almost every application conversation.

Usually framed the same way. Which is better? Which should I choose?

That’s not the right question.

In this episode, we walk through what MD and DO actually look like in practice, where there are real differences, and where applicants tend to over-index on things that don’t move their outcome.

We cover:
- What DO training adds and how much it actually shows up in practice
- Why GPA and MCAT ranges differ and what those numbers are actually used for
- How residency placement works and what matters more than your degree type
- What changes when you apply to both MD and DO programs at the same time

We also spend time on application strategy, because this is where most applicants get into trouble.

Applying to both can make sense. But only if you approach both with intention. If you treat DO as a fallback, don’t have a clear answer for why osteopathic medicine, or underestimate the timeline, it usually doesn’t go well.

If you’re trying to figure out how to position your application, this is a more useful way to think about MD vs DO.
